28km Two Bays Trail Run Melbourne November13th 2011

City to Sea Melbourne November13th 2011

It is a tough one to pull off! The city race to city to surf has got a long way to go before it can compete with it Sydney's sister. But we are sure with a few more years it will become an iconic Melbourne Fun Run. Congratulations Joelle, Belinda, Sue for participating and setting cracking times.

10km and Half Marathon Run Melbourne July 14th 2011

Sporting Spirit team was just superb. Congratulations - you make me a proud coach.

5km Queen of the Lake Feb 09 2011

The 5km around Albert Park Lake was a great race to start with for the girls of the Sporting Spirit team. Cold to begin with and we were concerned the park would be flooded. However it was dry on the track and the weather warmed beautifully for the race. As soon as we reached the car the rain came down, but we didn't care by then. Thanks girls for a great run.

HALF MARATHON St George Melbourne Marathon 2010 10th October 2010

First time half marathoners all of them. The weather was perfect, cool without being wet. The team got split up at the start but each ran with our training partner so we weren't alone. Cindy and Meg (me) ran together as discussed before the race. It was a fabulous race - together we had so much fun. We put on a burst of power in the last km as we zoomed through the crowd to enter the MCG, arms raised to the heavens as we charged across the finish line. So what about the next one????????

Favorite Run Tracks

  • Sandringham Football Club, running away from Hampton toward Black Rock along the sandy path and following along to the Rotunda at Sandringham which has the first loo stop and water tap.  There is another loo getting closer to the Half Moon Bay turn around point and another tap at the car park where we know we are about to turn around to go home. This is a nice 5km run with good facilities and a reasonably maintained path. From Sandringham Football club to just above Half Moon Bay Black Rock. Melways ref start in Sandringham on page 76 F8 and ends on page 85 J2 in Black Rock (roughly).
  • Scotchman's Creek Trail, this starts at East Malvern Station and goes through to Jells Park in Wheelers Hill. We haven't tried the East Malvern end of things but the track that starts at Warrigal Rd (near Chadstone Shopping centre) and runs through the back of Oakleigh along Scotchman's Creek is actually surprisingly green and pretty. The track has been improved considerably over the last 5 years and is quite safe and level, fast moving bikes have to be given right of way (like any shared path way but I have never had an altercation on this path). The track travels behind the Oakleigh Public Golf Course and once over Huntingdale Rd the track is just gorgeously green as you pass the retarding basin with the happy frog sounds to shuffle along to. The section of the track that peters out and meanders through suburban Glen Waverley can be a little confusing but the 60s architecture will keep you distracted. I haven't made the full trip to Jells Park yet, but the park itself is a great place to run with hills and lovely greenery to keep you going. The stretch of Scotchman's that is most enjoyable has been the 10km round trip from Atkinson Street in Oakleigh to what seems to be the second crossing at Waverley Rd. Just love it! Melways ref start in Oakleigh is on page 68 G5 and ends on page 70 K4 in Glen Waverley (roughly).
  • Dandenong Ranges National Park 1,000 steps and One Tree Hill track, this starts at the intersection of Burwood Hwy and Mount Dandenong Tourist Rd. The famous 1,000 steps Kakoda track is here but I prefer the School Track that starts on the left just above the Frog Tree Cafe before the stair climb. Head left with the track and it branches to the right, follow the branch. The track is UPHILL and unrelenting... be warned. It goes for about 6km up to One Tree Hill. Be prepared to walk it for long stretches. The scenery is just gorgeous, wallabies can be spotted on the track along with the tinkling cry of parrots. No drink stops are available so take water with you. TAKE IT HOME with you also. This is one of my favourite places in the world so be kind to it - the park gets huges numbers of visitors and deserves our respect so enjoy your wild track running but respect the venue! Favorite Outdoor Running and Cross Training Venues

Dendy Park, Hampton for a pleasant jog amongst the trees and the dogs! Running the perimeter of the park on a combination of soft gravel and footpath offers soft and hard surfaces to encourage adaptation to a range of different running surfaces. There is also a 400m track on grass for sprint drills and time based workouts. Also great for 400m lunge work, and fast slow knee lifts and lateral drill work on the forgiving grass surface.

A little further from the beach is Duncan Mckinnon Reserve in East Bentleigh. Great 1.2km outside track on soft gravel. Given the large number of people and groups using this park it is always a sociable place which never makes you feel out of place. There is also a fabulous athletics track open to the public when not being used by sporting clubs. My favorite aspect of this park is the hill that leads down into the grassed playing fields. The surface is very forgiving for sprint drills and lunges up hill as well as more plyometric based exercise that can often be tough on the feet without good support.

Heading back to the Bayside area to Fourth St Park in Black Rock/Beaumaris area. This place is great. An under cover area with benches is fab for body weight work like tall step ups and push ups, the half basketball court is great for sprint drills and walking lunges. A kiddies play area has some interesting ropes for climbing and chin up options. The outside walking track is short enough to be done a few times in a 30 minute training session! Then a leisurely stroll down a side street from the park will lead you to the beach! Hey hey hey STAIRS, SAND Yahhhhhh
